Boy, 14, Sentenced To 10 Years In Father's Murder

GYPSUM, Colo. (CBS4) - A 14-year-old boy has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing his father with a .22 caliber rifle.

The boy was 13 last May when he shot 50-year-old Joseph Kelly at their home in Gypsum, an Eagle County town on Interstate 70 in between Glenwood Springs and Vail.

The boy spent a week inside the house with the body until the father's boss asked police to check on them.

The teen will serve seven years in a juvenile facility and three years in adult prison.

The prosecuting attorney said the dual sentence reflects a need for punishment and rehabilitation, given the offender's age.
