Boulder-Area Trail Runner Rescued After Large Rock Traps Him

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - A 46-year-old trail runner has been rescued after a large rock fell on his foot near the summit of Bear Peak near Boulder.

Authorities say Dave Mackey was running on the mountain trail when he slipped and fell. He grabbed a large rock to stop his fall and pulled the rock loose, causing it to fall on his left leg.

Officials say the rock that left him trapped weighed between 300 and 400 pounds. He began yelling for help, and two people came to his aid.

Rescuers used a large stick to pry the rock off Mackey's leg and he was taken to the hospital with a severe leg injury.
