Blue Flags Line Highway 285 To Honor Fallen Deputy

PARK COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Hundreds of blue flags lined Highway 285 on this weekend to honor fallen Park County Deputy Nate Carrigan. He was shot and killed while serving an eviction notice in Bailey last week.

Two other deputies were injured in the shooting. The gunman, Martin Wirth, was shot and killed in the shootout.

Neighbors and deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office placed blue flags along a 23-mile stretch of Highway 285.

"It impacted everyone in the community," said volunteer Mariah Scherr.

"These men and women, they put on this uniform, they don't know if they're coming home tonight," said Mariah's mother. "Unfortunately, Deputy Carrigan didn't."

The flags and ribbons are a symbol, reminding an entire community about what can be lost so quickly.

"Just to remember Nate Carrigan and to pay tribute to the other officers in Colorado that sacrifice their lives everyday to keep us safe," said Mariah.

The memorial service for Cpl. Nate Carrigan is March 14 at 11 a.m. at Faith Bible Chapel at 6210 Ward Road in Arvada.
