More Bike Lanes This Year For 'Bike To Work Day'

DENVER (CBS4) - Next Wednesday thousands of bicyclists will be celebrating Bike to Work Day.

This Wednesday the traffic division with the Denver Police Department said they've responded to more than 80 crashes involving a vehicle and bicyclist. A few of those were deadly. They city is working to help lower the danger.

"This year Denver Public Works Transportation Mobility has already installed 10 miles of bike lanes and we have plans to install 2 1/2 miles of protected bikes lanes and 3 miles of neighborhood bikeways," said Emily Snyder, Denver Public Works Urban Mobility Manager.

Police say drivers need to have at least 3 feet between their car and the bicyclist.

"The most important thing you can do this month and through the summer to keep our roadways safe is just to remember that roads are for everybody, for people who walk, for people who bike and people who drive," said Bicycle Colorado Directo Piep van Heuven.
