Big Storm Bittersweet For Skiers & Boarders
GEORGETOWN, Colo. (CBS4) – There was a big mess in the high country Thursday night, especially along Interstate 70.
I-70 had to be closed for a long stretch of time Thursday evening and finally opened back up before 10 p.m. It was closed because so many cars literally couldn't stay on the road. They kept sliding off near Vail and Frisco.
Drivers were taken by surprise. The fast moving storm hit the mountains with force. It's good for skiers, but not much else.
"We have all of our ski gear and lots of hats and gloves, and we'll just find a hotel," one traveler said. "We decided to take the exit before we got stuck on the road."
One man driving from California to Oklahoma City got stuck off the highway. The snow was so heavy that he couldn't even get out of the parking lot.
The storm caused multiple accidents. The blizzard in the mountains is now the most consecutive snow Summit County has seen all winter.
The snow is a little bittersweet for skiers and boarders. It's one of the best storms of the season, but it may be very difficult to get to the resorts.
