Bicyclists Push For Protected Bike Lane Through Downtown Denver

DENVER (CBS4)- Bicyclists and bike advocates are pushing for a protected bike lane through downtown Denver.

They gathered at Civic Center Park on Friday for a "love in" to show their support for a protected bike lane.

They want the lane to run all the way from Brighton Boulevard to Interstate 25 and continue along Broadway through downtown.

The cyclists also filled out valentines for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock urging him to "connect the heart of Denver."

"Along Broadway, too, there might be a little bit of safety factor depending on where they put the lane itself. If it's going to be in between parking and all along moving traffic, so I mean, there could be some safety problems but you know if they plan it out well enough I think it would be a great addition," said bike advocate Alex Ball.

"I am a driver, I drive cars but I am also a bike commuter, and I do own a bike and I honestly prefer biking over driving and so if bike lanes are available I would absolutely use them," said bike advocate Courtney Eppler. "I don't ride my bike as much right now because bike lanes aren't available and I don't fee safe biking in a lot of traffic."

The Denver and Golden Triangle Neighborhood Plan shows a bike lane and B-Cycle stand at 11th and Broadway in front of Floyd's barbershop.
