Bear Climbs Into Car, Helps Itself To Lunch Near Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Two landscape employees discovered a 250-pound black bear sitting inside their truck while on the job near Colorado Springs, and the bear decided to hang out and help himself to a sandwich.

Colorado's wildlife is always exciting to see, like a hungry bear caught on surveillance video, who then tipped over a trash bin out of the camera's view outside a Colorado Springs restaurant last August. But the latest bear spotting was more of a close encounter for some employees with Front Range Arborists.

"I know our boss' reaction at first was that, 'It's cool.' Then the second reaction was, 'Is there any damage done to my truck?' " Jason Sharp with Front Range Arborists said.

Sharp says his crews were working in the backyard of a home in the Broodmoore area when the homeowner alerted them to the bear camping out in their truck. The homeowner began snapping pictures.

"The windows were open in the truck and he came in through the passenger side and made himself at home," Sharp said.

The bear stayed inside the truck for about a half hour and helped himself to lunch.

"There were two lunches in the front of the truck," Sharp said. "It obviously had to be pretty good."

Sharp said it was a turkey sandwich made by one of his employee's moms.

"That's kind of the running joke around the shop is that, 'He ate your mom's sandwich.' "

The bear then left.

"Just moseyed off down the road."

The manager of the landscaping company says he's now telling employees to roll up their windows if they leave their lunches inside a company car.
