Aurora Honors Fallen Officers With Ceremony
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - The Aurora Police Department honored officers killed in line of duty in a ceremony Tuesday morning.
Five fallen Aurora police officers killed in the line of duty, dating back into the 1980s, were remembered as well as other officers from across the state.
Names were added to the Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial in Golden last week, honoring those who lost their lives while on duty in 2015. In total there are more than 300 names on that memorial.
Tuesday's ceremony took a moment to remember all the lives lost serving the Aurora Police Department.
Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said the ceremony was a way to bring the community together to honor the sacrifice those officers made.
"We always think it's important to honor the sacrifices they made and also make sure we let the families know they are still part of the police family, so if they ever need anything from us, we're always going to be there for them," Metz said.
The last time a member of the department died on duty was almost 10 years ago, but the ceremony also paid tribute to fallen officers from across Colorado.
From Jan. of 2015 until March of 2016, seven officers have died in the line of duty across the state.
The ceremony was held in the Memorial Courtyard of the Aurora Municipal Center Campus.
