Audit Is Critical Of CDOT's Handling Of The U.S. 36 Project

DENVER (CBS4) - A state audit that's been made public that criticizes the way the Colorado Department of Transportation handled the U.S. 36 Express Lanes Project.

CDOT partnered with a private company on the construction which allows the company to charge a toll for the express lanes. The audit said CDOT didn't do enough to get feedback from the public and state representatives when it made the partnership.

CDOT's executive director actually agreed with that aspect of the report.

"Which we take to heart, and we will make the appropriate changes as we move forward on other P3 projects," CDOT Executive Director Shailen Bhatt said.

But the audit went on to say the public-private partnership was actually the best value for taxpayer money because it didn't require CDOT to take on a $60 million federal loan.
