ATM User Robbed At Gunpoint With Children In Car

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A surveillance camera captured video of a woman being robbed at gunpoint with her children in the car while going through a drive-up ATM in Aurora.

It happened Wednesday, July 1 at the US Bank near East Alameda Avenue and South Abilene Street shortly before 10 p.m.

As video shows, the woman pulls up to the ATM, her two children in the back seat, begins her transaction, and is quickly approached by a man with a gun.

"I mean, she was pretty terrified," said Judy Lutkin with the Aurora Police Department.

She said the suspect got away with $85 and the woman's car keys.

"I think it's a person who's desperate. And, I think when you're dealing with someone who's that desperate, you don't know what they're going to do," Lutkin said.

The suspect is considered armed and dangers. Other ATM users are now on high alert.

"It's a little scary, especially with your kids in the car," said ATM user Dick Baines. He said his bank is usually busy, and is surprised the robber hit here.

"Well, you think about that kind of thing in advance, but that's why I look around.  If anything looks suspicious, you just go on and find another ATM somewhere," Baines said.

It's a suspicion also on the mind of customer Charleston Blue.

"All the time, all the time.  So we try to go as a team," Blue said, "I don't, I really don't come here at night, when it's dark."

Police are asking for the public's help to catch the crook.

"We're anxious, as you can imagine, to identify this person and get him into custody," Lutkin said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP, or Agent Jason McDonald, Aurora Police District 2 Detective Unit: 303-739-6833.
