Aspen Gondola Operations Return To Normal

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — The Silver Queen Gondola on Aspen Mountain is back open for business after being closed for mechanical reasons on three of the busiest days of the season.

Aspen Skiing Co. spokesman Jeff Hanle said Thursday it took a lot of work to find and install two of the bearings, which are more than 2 feet in diameter and weigh 160 pounds. Replacement bearings were eventually located in Pennsylvania.

During a routine inspection Sunday evening, a maintenance worker noticed oil leaking in the wheel at the top of the gondola. The gondola was closed for the past three days because of safety concerns.

The reason for the malfunction is under investigation.
