Ash Borer Detected In New Places In Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Department of Agriculture says a destructive beetle called the emerald ash borer has been detected in additional places in Boulder.
After the beetle was found in Boulder last September, the city was divided into a grid of one-square-mile sections and branches were sampled from each. The survey found trees in five sections were infested with the beetle, and the agriculture department says trees in three additional grid sections are now infested.
Mitch Yergert with the department's Plant Industry Division says the trees in the new locations were probably infested three or more years ago and are not a sign of further spread of the insect.
Officials say the beetles have killed more than 50 million ash trees in more than 20 U.S. states since 2002.
