"It is critical for Anchor Center to have volunteers," said Frances Owens, Community Relations Manager for Anchor Center for Blind Children.

"We're one of the very, very few schools like this, and so we are constantly having to fundraise. And when we can have volunteers ... help us perform the duties and the things that we need to do, (they) learn more about the Anchor Center and what a special, special learning center it is."

The Center needs 44 volunteers for Day of Service. They will be doing some detail cleaning, preparing and staining a wood fence and maintaining the garden, which is an important learning lab for the students.

"We actually have a horticulturist on staff that works with the children, so that they have more variety about learning tactilely about food and about eating. A lot of times, children with visual impairment have a hard time learning to eat," Owens told CBS4.

Xcel Energy's Day of Service is Saturday, Sept. 10 from 8a.m. to 11 a.m.
