Alternate Route Sought Over Cottonwood Pass

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Local and state officials are considering a proposal to create an alternate route over Cottonwood Pass to prevent major detours when rock falls and accidents close Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon.

Concerns rose after a major rock slide sent transportation officials scrambling in February to find alternate routes to avoid detours of more than 100 miles.

Some people tried to take the route over the 8,300-foot pass between Garfield and Eagle counties, but it's not paved and parts are closed in winter.

Officials say the main issue standing in the way of their plan is the cost and who will pay for it.
