Air Force Professor Found Stranded On Cliff Near Salida

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — An Air Force Academy professor missing for two days after going for a hike is recovering after being rescued by a helicopter.

Lt. Col. Dave Richie was found stranded on a cliff face northwest of Salida on Tuesday with a leg or ankle injury after searchers used signals from his cell phone to narrow the search area. Because of the rugged, steep terrain, an Air National Guard Blackhawk was used to hoist Richie off the cliff near Tabeguache Peak.

Academy spokesman John Van Winkle told The Gazette of Colorado Springs that the 43-year-old astronautics professor was "injured, but talkative" after the rescue.

Richie, an experienced hiker, was reported missing after he failed to turn up for a separate hike with academy staffers on Monday.
