Accident Closes 1 Of 2 Detours Around Glenwood Canyon

OAK CREEK, Colo. (CBS4) - A traffic accident had the northern detour route around Interstate 70's Glenwood Canyon blocked Friday afternoon.

Both lanes of Colorado Highway 131 were stopped south of Oak Creek, which is south of Steamboat Springs, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

I-70 through Glenwood Canyon was closed Monday due to rock slides that heavily damaged the highway.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said they hope to reopen one lane through the canyon by Saturday.

Until then, travelers must take an hours-long detour either north through Steamboat Springs via 131 or south over Monarch Pass via 24.

One lane of Highway 131 was reopened shortly before 1 p.m., and the two directions of traffic alternated during the accident cleanup.
