A Lunar Eclipse Will Grace Colorado Skies Saturday Morning

DENVER (CBS4) - There will be a treat in the skies over Colorado in the early morning hours on April 4.

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible starting at 4:16 a.m. and peaking at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Jeff Tropeano with the Denver Astronomical Society says while it is a partial eclipse, for those in and around Denver, it will almost look like a total eclipse.

This phenomena occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth to cast a red shadow, creating a very cool effect.

Tropeano says the shadow is red because you're seeing the sunset on the other side of the world being projected onto the surface of the moon.

This is the third of the 2014-2015 tetrad, which is a series of 4 lunar eclipses spaced 6 months apart.

The fourth will occur on Sept. 28, 2015.
