5 Killed After Amtrak's Southwest Chief Hits Van Near Trinidad

TRINIDAD, Colo. (CBS4) - Five people were killed after a train struck a vehicle near Trinidad Sunday morning.

According to Trooper Art Gumke with the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred on Las Animas County Road 32, approximately 3.miles north of Trinidad just before 10 a.m.

A van carrying six people -- two adults and four children -- was struck by the Southwest Chief Amtrak train en route from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Gumke said the driver of the van failed to yield right of way to the train. He said the van wasn't stopped on the tracks.

Five of the occupants died. One of the occupants was flown to Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora with serious injuries.

Alcohol and drugs aren't suspected in the crash.

Authorities are not yet releasing the names of the victims, but a GoFundMe account has been created for the family's funeral.

Nobody on the train was injured.
