Triple Shooting At Homeless Camp Near Capitol: 1 Dead, No Suspect In Custody

DENVER (CBS4) -- One man is dead and two others are seriously hurt after a shooting at a homeless camp near the Colorado Capitol and Denver police are searching for the shooter. It happened just before 4 p.m. Thursday at 14th and Broadway. Police say the two people injured in the shooting were bystanders who were not involved.

Two of the victims, both men, were transported to the hospital. One of those victims died. The second victim is in critical condition. A third man walked in to a hospital for help. That victim is also considered critical.

Denver police later issued a tweet stating that the two men who were injured are expected to survive.

"Officers are attempting to identify and locate the suspect," police said.

Around 5:30 p.m., Denver police tweeted "Officers continue gathering details regarding the suspect and the circumstances."

It's not clear whether the people involved had been camping at the park, but multiple tents were cordoned off with police tape.

Earlier in the day, Gov. Jared Polis was asked if leaders and law enforcement should do something about people camping in parks downtown. Gov. Polis said it was up to Denver officials to enforce city laws and ordinances.

"If you're talking about Civic Plaza, much of that is city property... it's subject to Denver law," Polis stated. "I'm not an authority on Denver law but I believe their voters have voted to have a camping ban. It doesn't seem to me like that's being enforced right now. I do see people camping."
