2nd-Grade Teacher Says No Homework This School Year

GODLEY, Texas (AP) — A second-grade teacher in North Texas has adopted a no-homework lesson plan for this school year.

Brandy Young teaches at Godley Elementary School in Godley, 20 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Young sent a note to parents last week saying she's trying something new and that any homework would only be items not finished by the student during the school day. Her letter says "There will be no formally assigned homework this year."

Young, whose note was posted online by a parent, wrote that research has not proven that homework improves student performance.

Young encouraged parents to spend their evenings doing what she says has proven to correlate with education success — eat dinner as a family, read together, have the children play outside and get students to bed early.
