2 Men Go After Dogs Attacking Postal Carrier

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Two men armed with a shovel and a trowel went after three dogs that were attacking a postal carrier.

Earl Tilford raced up the block when three dogs, Bowser, Onyx and Clover, escaped from their yard and tackled the postal worker making his rounds through the Longmont neighborhood.

Tilford's neighbor Jim Peeples joined in to thwart the attack. Tilford was armed with a trowel and Peeples had a shovel.

"They had knocked him down," said Peeples. "I didn't like doing it but I wasn't going to let them, you know, because they would have chewed him up. He would have been in the hospital, probably, now."

"He cut them off and I went up and called 911 and then they come back and bit me," said Tilford.

Tilford was bitten in the leg but is expected to be okay.

"Our whole family is horribly upset," said Dana Cernak, the mother of the dog owner.

She says the dogs typically don't exhibit this type of behavior, "These are family dogs that are around kids and people all the time."

Cernak said the gate the dogs used to make their escape will be fortified.

"We understand how frightening this is and this will never happen again," said Cernak.

Tilford has some advice for the postal carrier, "Run faster."

The owner of the dogs is facing a hefty fine for not securing her dogs, $3,000 and more than 500 days in jail.
