Structures Burn In Brush Fire East Of Wellington
WELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Two hay barns and another outbuilding were damaged in a brush fire east of Wellington in Weld County Saturday afternoon.
According to the Weld County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 2 pm. the fire began in a ditch in the 21100 area of Weld County Road 21 and 100 and then spread west to the buildings located in the 49000 block of Weld County Road 17.
Dry and windy conditions fueled the blaze. Most of the fire was put out by Saturday night but crews were still on scene attending to hot spots.
There were anxious moments for nearby homeowners.
"All of a sudden I heard pounding on the door, went up to check, nobody was at the door," a nearby resident said. "But I looked out and there were all kinds of vehicles, smoke. And then I stepped outside to talk to someone, and they were like, 'You need to get out.' "
One homeowner said the flames came within 20 feet of his house.
Approximately 300 acres of grassland burned.
The cause of the fire is also not known and there weren't any reports of injuries.
