2 From Florida Dead After Chase From Colorado To New Mexico

SHIPROCK, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico authorities say a Florida man and his 14-year-old niece were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head after a car chase across the Southwest.

Lt. Kyle Lincoln of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday the man was 31-year-old Benjamin James Edwards III of St. Augustine. Lincoln says Benjamin was a person of interest in the disappearance of his niece, also of St. Augustine, who was the second person found dead. The girl was reported missing May 4.

The chase began Monday after Montezuma County, Colorado, sheriffs were called after gasoline was stolen in Cortez. The chase, in which shots were fired from the suspects' vehicle but not by police, ended with the two stopped on the Navajo Nation. Officers ordered the occupants out, received no response, then found them dead.
