2 Arrested, Accused Of Stealing Mail, Packages

LOUISVILLE, Colo. (CBS4)- Police arrested a man and a woman they believe is responsible for mail and package theft after they were caught red handed.

Investigators say Mathew Vigil and Morgan Perry were stealing packages and mail from porches and mailboxes and when they were caught, had numerous pieces of mail and packages from a number of different addresses in their vehicle.

"That's something you ordered for Christmas, probably for a loved on or yourself and to have it taken away from you, that's infuriating," said Louisville resident Jordan Hinkle.

It was in Hinkle's neighborhood that Vigil and Perry were arrested after someone noticed a vehicle driving around that seemed suspicious. Both Vigil and Perry were booked into the Boulder County Jail on theft-related charges.

Postal inspectors say mail thefts increase this time of year.

"The postal service is one of a number of carriers that deliver holiday packages, but if you do steal packages from the U.S. mail system, you can be charged with a felony," said U.S. Postal Service Postal Inspector Eric Manuel.

The crime could cost a thief five years in jail and a $250,000 fine.

Police believe there may be other victims and are working with the postal inspector to determine how widespread the alleged thefts may be.

Anyone with information regarding Vigil or Perry is asked to call Cpl. Matt Trujillo at 303.335.4661, Officer Barrett Odenbach at 303.335.4684 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
