14-Year-Old Boy Is The Newest Officer With The Aurora Police Department
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - The newest officer in the Aurora Police Department is a 14-year old boy.
Ben Brewer got a welcome wagon in Aurora like no other with a limo, bagpipes, the Honor Guard and a few handshakes from Aurora police officers. APD Officer Jim Seneca, who is also with Cops Fighting Cancer, says law enforcement officers are known for running toward danger.
"And face it head on with strong will, determination and courage and bravery," said Seneca. "Our friend Ben has these similar traits with his battle with his cancer."
APD's Chief Nick Metz was proud to appoint Brewer as an honorary police officer. Ben, who is a student at Thunder Ridge Middle School, was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma at 2 years old. Since then his cancer relapsed four times, and he's currently undergoing treatment.
The chief told Ben's family that they have the support of the APD.
"We're very careful about who we let into the family," Metz said. "We want you and your parents know that you will always be a part of the Aurora Police Department family. We are proud to have you."
Ben's family sat beside him for Wednesday's honor. Ben's mom, Sarah, said she couldn't be more proud of her son. She said Ben is her inspiration and constant teacher through this battle of cancer.
"I've learned how to fight for what I believe in," Sarah said. "I've learned how to get up the next day when I don't feel like it and keep going."
Ben is a young man of few words for the camera. His family said he doesn't like being in the limelight. Ben said he's very taken back by all the day's events.
"I feel honored, I feel very honored," he said.
