11-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized After Being Shot Early Sunday Morning

DENVER (CBS4) - An 11-year-old girl has been hospitalized after being shot while walking in her neighborhood early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened just before at 2 a.m. at 47th Avenue and Race Street. It's not clear if the girl was hit by a stray bullet or if the shooting was intentional.

Allison Anderson was jolted out of bed to the sounds of shouting and gunfire and called police.

"Oh my goodness, those are not firecrackers, I had better call the police," Andersons said. "I couldn't really gage exactly what they were saying and bickering and arguing about, but they were shouting at each other, and it escalated, and then at that point I heard gunshots."

Police say the girl was walking with a relative when she was struck in the leg by a bullet.

Resident Marisela Garcia-Rodriguez says noisy parties filled the streets of her normally quiet neighborhood. The crime leaves some feeling scared to step outside.

"I need to watch out for my surroundings, and watch this neighborhood now, closely," said Gabriela Cordero, who also heard the gunshots.

Police say the girl was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Denver police have no information about the shooter. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
