11 Injured Apartment In Fire, Some Forced To Jump From Windows

DENVER (CBS4) - A fire at an apartment building on Federal Boulevard at West 26th Avenue forced some residents to jump from their windows late Sunday night.

It happened at approximately 9:15 p.m., and the fire was out at 9:45. Though the damage does not appear significant on the outside, the third floor hallway sustained much damage, according to an officer on scene.

The fire trapped some residents in the building, forcing them to jump out from second and third floor windows to escape the flames.

Eleven patients were taken to Denver Health Medical Center for injuries from the fire, most for smoke inhalation. One woman on scene said a neighbor suffered burns. As of 11:20 p.m., six were in fair condition, three in serious, and two in critical.

Denver Public Schools opened a nearby school for the residents who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
