700-Acre Wildfire Near Canon City Allowed To Burn
CANON CITY, Colo. (AP/CBS4) — A wildfire sparked by lightning on Monday near Canon City has grown to about 700 acres but isn't threatening any houses.
Firefighters were building indirect containment lines around the Eightmile Fire on Friday but aren't actively fighting it.
Fire activity remains very active with warmer temperatures, lower humidity and wind have increased fire behavior.
Fire spokesman Gregg Goodland said its smoke could be visible from as far away as Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
The fire is burning in very steep, rugged terrain on Bureau of Land Management land in Phantom Canyon. A helicopter and two-single engine air tankers are on standby.
Phantom Canyon road remains closed between mile markers eight and 12.
There are no pre-evacuation or evacuation orders.
