1 Of 3 Suspects Eliminated From Aspen Socialite Murder Case
ASPEN, Colo. (CBS4) - One of three people accused of murdering an Aspen socialite has been released from jail.
The district attorney dropped charges against Nancy Styler. Styler's husband William and another woman, Katherine Carpenter, are still considered suspects in the death of Nancy Pfister.
After the Stylers' arrest at a motel in Basalt, Nancy Styler was held in jail for 106 days without bond. Late Tuesday she was freed because documents from the district attorney's office said there wasn't enough evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
On Feb. 26 deputies were called to a Snowmass home. Pfister, a prominent Aspen resident and friend to many residents had been found beaten to death and stuffed in a closet. It took investigators nearly a week to find enough evidence and arrest William and Nancy Styler, former Castle Rock residents.
The Stylers rented Pfister's Aspen house while she was out of the country.
Carpenter was arrested nearly 2 weeks after the Stylers, but investigators said all three were involved and charged them with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and accessory to murder.
At several court hearings defense attorneys demanded a bond hearing so their clients could get out of jail, but that's not scheduled until next month.
Much of the case has remained sealed.
Nancy Styler is now out of jail and staying with friends and family. Her attorney said he appreciates the integrity of the district attorney's office to let his client go when they realized there wasn't enough evidence.
