Aurora police investigate double fatal crash in Expo Park neighborhood

1 man, 1 child dead after crash on S. Havana Street and E. Exposition Avenue

Aurora Police Department confirmed Friday night that a man and child are dead after a fatal crash on S. Havana Street and E. Exposition Avenue.

The department says other additional people were injured in the crash with the extent of their injuries varying.

According to APD, the crash occurred at 6 p.m. and involved two vehicles as one vehicle rolled.

APD says a "red 2017 Dodge Charger was driving north on South Havana when it struck a maroon 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was driving south on Havana and attempting to turn left onto eastbound Exposition Avenue."

The impact from the collision caused the Jeep to move 100-feet into a drainage retention wall before stopping in the northbound lanes of Havana Street.

A 43-year-old man and a 5-year-old passenger reportedly died at the scene as a result of the crash, while two more passenger that were the ages of 8 and 10 were taken to a local hospital for injuries. They are expected to survive, according to APD.

APD says the driver of the charger, who was reportedly a 21-year-old man was also taken to an area hospital for treatment with the extent of his injuries currently unknown.

Investigators suspect speed and drug intoxication were the key attributors to the crash.

Aurora Police Chief Art Acevdo issued a tweet Friday night saying: "I'm at this crash scene, please avoid northbound Havana as it will remain closed for an extended period of time at the intersection of Kentucky to facilitate the ongoing criminal investigation."

APD says the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office will release the identities of the victims after notifications of family.

The crash marks the 53rd and 54th traffic-related deaths this year in Aurora, according to APD.
