Your Jake Arrieta-Is-Registering-Insane-Numbers Update

(CBS) Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta's stardom has been well-known for some time around these parts, and he exploded onto the national scene when he fired a no-hitter against the Dodgers on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball in August.

But just how dominant has he been? Well, he's already joined the company of Hall of Famer Bob Gibson and is looking to build on it. He's 19-6 for the season with a 1.99 ERA and 0.92 WHIP.

Arrieta stands alongside Gibson as the only pitcher since 1913 to win eight consecutive starts with an ERA below 0.50, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Gibson accomplished the feat in 1968 en route to the Cy Young, with a minuscule 0.25 ERA over those eight wins. For his part, Arrieta has won eight consecutive starts while registering a 0.46 ERA in that span.

In another interesting nugget, Arrieta has a 0.93 ERA since the All-Star break. If he finishes at that mark, it'd be the lowest second-half ERA in MLB history, with a minimum of 75 innings pitched, according to ESPN.

Since being roughed up in a mid-June start against the Indians, Arrieta is 13-1 with an ERA of 1.00.

In each of his three starts against Pittsburgh earlier this season, Arrieta has gone seven innings. The number of runs, all earned, that he allowed? One, one and zero. That's good for an 0.86 ERA against the Pirates.
