14-year-old girl suffers graze wound in South Shore shooting

Teen shot in South Shore alley

CHICAGO (CBS) – A 14-year-old girl is wounded after a shooting in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday at midnight.

Police said the girl was walking outside at 12 a.m., in the 7800 block of South Kingston, when she was shot.

The teen told police she was at a party when she got into an argument with a "known suspect." She told police she knew earlier in the evening that the person had a handgun. That person then threatened to shoot the girl if she did not leave.

"We heard some loud, boom boom boom, and bullets came through the window," said Felicia, who witnessed the shooting but did not want to give her last name. "Somebody was shooting, and now we hear someone was grazed by the bullets. This is sad. It's every day over here."

She was shot as she was leaving. She suffered a graze wound to the back and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.

The number of children shot in Chicago since the beginning of this year is one-fourth the number of total children shot in all of last year. In the last week, at least seven kids were caught in the crossfire. Three of those were in alleys.

The first teen was shot in the back of the head and did not survive. It was around 2 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of South Lawndale Avenue when Maleek Smith was fatally shot.

Then on Wednesday in Humboldt Park, there was another alleyway shooting. An 11-year-old girl and a 22-year-old man were changing a tire when they were hit.

In all three cases, no arrests have been made.

We asked CPD for the latest count: This year at least 71 children have been shot. In all of 2021, 276 children under 16 were also shot. Four months into 2022, the number of victims is more than a quarter of last year's total.

Neighbors say they are exhausted. Many times they are scared to speak out for fear of retribution.

The 14-year-old in Saturday's shooting and the 11 and 22-year-old victims in Wednesday's shooting are all expected to be okay.

Chicago police are investigating all three cases.
