Worker Dies In South Loop Construction Accident

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A construction worker was killed in a job site accident Friday morning in the South Loop.

The man was working on the fourth floor of a 50-story condominium project under construction in the 900 block of South Sate Street.

The Fire Department said the man was in the garage area, working with high-pressure air – perhaps a steam pipe – when a device malfunctioned, and exploded in his face. The worker suffered massive head injuries, and was killed instantly.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has confirmed the fatality.

The primary contractor at the work site is Walsh Construction, but it was unclear if the worker was an employee of Walsh or a subcontractor.
