Woman shot, killed after interrupting burglary in Auburn Gresham garage

Woman, 21, shot and killed confronting burglars in garage

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Another Chicago family is in pain, after a young woman was murdered while confronting burglars in Auburn Gresham Wednesday evening.

At 7:45 p.m., the 21-year-old woman, identified as Jessica Hudson, was inside her house in the 7500 block of South Wolcott Avenue, when she thought she heard or saw something in the detached garage behind the house. She came out to the garage to find people inside.

It was not clear how many people were in the garage, but at least one of them had a gun and fired multiple rounds at her.

She was wounded in the chest, back, and arm, and was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

The suspects took off running and were still on the run late Wednesday night. Many in the neighborhood said it was just heartening to see when so many people were out enjoying the weather.

"Unfortunately in Chicago, we can't just enjoy the weather. This summer, or what it's looking like, is just bad. It's bad," said the Pastor Donovan Price of Street Pastors. "But there's still hope."

Area Two detectives are investigating. Late Wednesday, detectives were going around to homes in the neighborhood, looking to see if there is any surveillance video of if anyone saw any suspicious people running off.
