Teen Girl Critically Wounded In Chatham Shooting

(CBS) -- An 18-year-old woman was shot in the head Tuesday afternoon in the East Chatham neighborhood.

The shooting occurred at about 1:20 p.m. in the 900 block of East 83rd Street, according to police.

18-year-old Chantral Hammontree was in the passenger seat of a van when she was shot. A witness told CBS 2 she saw the shooter and then took cover. She said the shooter was wearing a red hoodie and had short dreadlocks.

Police said she was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and transferred to Mount Sinai, where she is in serious condition.

Randy Berry, the girl's uncle, says her weave may have cushioned the blow to her head.

"It's like a walking miracle. Nobody gets shot in the head and is still awake and still talking," said Berry.

Berry says his niece knows who shot her and he threatened to hurt her before because of her ties to another relative who was shot in May.
