CHICAGO (CBS) -- A mother was shot Tuesday night while taking out the garbage at a home in the Pill Hill neighborhood on the Southeast Side.

The 48-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the 9300 block of South Chappel Avenue around 11 p.m. She was in critical condition Wednesday morning at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police said the woman's son had been in an altercation with a person earlier in the day, and that person returned Tuesday night, and took aim at his mother as she was taking out the trash.

No one was in custody for the shooting early Wednesday, and police have not provided a description of the suspect.
