Woman Overdoses Moments After Surrendering To Illinois Jail

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities say a woman overdosed and was saved by officers moments after she walked into a suburban Chicago jail to turn herself in on an arrest warrant.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran says the 37-year-old woman surrendered herself around 1 p.m. Thursday on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Curran says a short time after the woman arrived at the jail reception area she collapsed on the floor and became unconscious.

Officers recognized symptoms of an opioid overdose and began administering the overdose antidote naloxone.

Curran says it took four doses before the woman regained consciousness. She was taken to a local hospital.

Curran says "When someone surrendering at the jail overdoses on opioids, it serves as yet another example of how serious an opioid epidemic we're facing."
