Woman Found Beaten To Death In Archer Heights Basement

Updated 05/21/15 - 10:40 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police were questioning two men after their mother was found dead Wednesday night inside a home in the Archer Heights neighborhood.

Maria Sadelski, 54, was found dead around 8 p.m. in the basement of her home in the 4800 block of South Karlov Avenue, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. She appeared to have been beaten to death.

Police said they were investigating the death as a homicide, which might be domestic-related.

Neighbors and police sources said one of the woman's sons killed her, and the other attacked his brother when he found out about the murder. That confrontation led to a crash down the block, when a Volkswagen Jetta drove through the door of a garage, and out the side wall.

Police were questioning both men in connection with the woman's death.

"I just can't believe it happened next door. We were just watching the TV. While we were there, that was happening. It's just really scary to think that that could happen," neighbor Esmeralda Flores said. "They were always so nice to us; really nice neighbors."

Police have not officially confirmed the two men being questioned are the victim's sons. No charges had been filed as of 10:30 a.m.
