Police Seek Driver That Killed Woman During A Hit-And-Run In Austin

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police are looking for the driver that killed a woman in a hit-and-run in the Austin neighborhood.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez is in South Austin with more details.

The incident happened around 6:15 a.m. Monday morning in the crosswalk of Chicago Avenue and Lorel. The women fell or collapsed in the street while crossing.

As witnesses stop to help her, she was run over by a car and it was all caught on video.

The surveillance video is chilling. One moment a woman is walking across the street, the next she is on the ground.

Witnesses rushed to help her, including one driver who stops his car in the street and puts on his hazard lights to guide other drivers around the fallen woman.

"I immediately with another fella, who was waiting at the bus stop try to go over there and give her some assistance," said witness, John Moore.

But before Moore could get to the woman, another car drives around the parked car with its hazards on, and runs over the woman lying in the street, not once, but twice.

The hit-and-run driver the accelerates from the scene and drives away.

Moore watched in horrified disbelief.

"I couldn't even imagine how that car could not have seen that human being laying the street," Moore said. "It wasn't like the lady had on anything dark. She had on a cream colored coat."

Moore said the saddest part is that the driver just kept going.

"Whoever was driving that car, they had to see the lady," Moore said.

Police describe the vehicle as a mid-size white sedan. It was last seen eastbound on Chicago Avenue.

Chicago Police said the woman was 50-years old. Her name is not being released, pending family notification.

So far no arrests have been made in the case.

If you have any information about the car or the hit-and-run, you are asked to call police.

Investigators with major accidents were out at the scene collecting video from the multiple surveillance cameras in the area.
