Woman, Child Wounded In Marquette Park Shooting

(CBS) – Two people were shot – one, a young girl – in Chicago's Marquette Park neighborhood Friday evening.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. near 68th and Artesian.  Police say a man ran out of an alley and fired at least one bullet and striking a 34-year-old woman and a child. A relative of the younger victim said the girl is five.

The shooting happened around the time Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson was holding a news conference to discuss plans to combat crime during the summer.

"We need the police officers to get out of the squad cars and have more contact with the community," he said. "You're seeing increased foot patrols and increased bike patrols because that makes it easier for the police to interact with the community."

Both shooting victims were expected to be okay.
