Woman Charged With Making False Report After Hit And Run Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 21-year-old woman was charged with making a false report claiming that her car was stolen after she lost control of the car and crashed it into a creek in Waukegan.

Nancy Facundo, 21, of the 38200 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park, was charged with disorderly conduct of making a false police report and false report of vehicle theft, according to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

On Oct. 23, Lake County Sheriff's officers were dispatched to the 38200 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park, for a call of a stolen vehicle. Facundo reported that her 2002 Dodge Durango had been stolen from her home, police said.

Facundo said the car was stolen between 8 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., and that she kept the car unlocked but still had the keys. Officers completed a stolen vehicle report that placed the Dodge into a stolen vehicle database, police said.

At 10 a.m. Oct. 24, Waukegan Police officers responded to the area of North Jackson Street and Low Avenue in Waukegan for a call of a car that crashed into the creek. The officers determined that the car, which was involved in a hit and run crash, belonged to Facundo, police said.

The officers "became suspicious" of the car being stolen because evidence in the car looked to be "staged," police said.

Facundo told Waukegan Police Officers that she falsely reported her vehicle was stolen after losing control of the car and crashing it into the creek, police said.

Facundo was arrested Friday, and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 23.
