With New Expanded Warehouse, North Suburban Non-Profit Hopes To Add Jobs For Developmentally Disabled
(CBS) -- A north suburban non-profit expands its warehouse space today, and with it…possibly more jobs for the disabled.
Search Inc. does job training for people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.
CEO John Lipscomb says two of them work in the warehouse helping to fill orders, mainly for clothing manufacturers.
Today, Search Inc. has its ribbon-cutting as it moves from a 30,000 square foot warehouse in Waukegan to a 63,000 square foot warehouse in Des Plaines.
Lipscomb says it's hoped that, by expanding, two more people with disabilities will be hired "in the very near future," making up nearly 40 percent of the warehouse staff.
"It is empowering. It is uplifting and it builds self-esteem," Lipscomb says about work done by those with disabilities.
Lipscomb says the developmentally disabled workers make a minimum of $10 an hour.
