With More Severe Weather, Rain Pummels Hard-Hit Naperville And Woodridge After Tornado
WOODRIDGE, Ill. (CBS) -- Severe storms across the Chicago area are especially difficult to deal with for west suburban Naperville and Woodridge, which were already hit hard last weekend when a tornado ripped through the area.
Saturday afternoon police in Naperville reported flooding that caused the closure of several roads, including Julian Street at Prairie Avenue and Washington Street at Bailey Road.
On Friday, the Village of Woodridge reported more than 150 homes have major damage from Sunday night's tornado, and 29 homes are unlivable. Nearby Naperville is also still recovering.
In the battle against drenching rains, some of these damaged homes need multiple tarps in an attempt to keep water from further damaging the interior areas exposed by the EF-2/EF-3 tornado's ferocity.
Meanwhile, the American Red Cross began welcoming people to its rescue site at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, at 7200 Janes Ave. in Woodridge, Saturday morning.
Nearly two dozen disaster relief agencies are hosting a resource center at the school for victims of the west suburban tornado. They will be on hand to answer questions on everything from debris removal to permits needed to rebuild.
The American Red Cross is one of the agencies helping tornado victims – along with government, religious, and local groups.
The resource center will also be open Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon. If you go, bring proof of your address and a photo ID, and masks are required.
More hours may be added as needed.
