Winter Traffic Shifts Begin On Jane Addams Tollway

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Traffic on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) has begun shifting into its winter configuration as the second phase of the $2.5 billion I-90 rebuilding and widening project continues.

Work began this past weekend to shift traffic between Illinois Route 31 and Illinois Route 25 onto the new Fox River Bridge and shift westbound traffic between Beverly Road and Illinois Route 25 onto new pavement, according to a statement from the Illinois Tollway.

Westbound traffic between Beverly Road and the Elgin Toll Plaza has already been shifted onto new pavement.

Throughout December, traffic shifts are scheduled to continue and be completed in segments between Beverly Road and the Kennedy Expressway. Work to shift traffic will begin in the eastbound lanes between Elmhurst Road and Lee Street, followed by the westbound lanes and then in both directions between Elmhurst Road and Illinois Route 53, according to the statement.

Eastbound traffic between Lee Street and the Kennedy Expressway has already been shifted for winter travel, according to the statement.

During the winter months, traffic in both directions between the Elgin Toll Plaza and Kennedy Expressway will be shifted onto three lanes of new pavement. But eastbound traffic between Roselle and Meacham roads will be split with a work zone in the middle and two lanes on either side into the summer, according to the statement.

During the week of December 14, a traffic shift is scheduled between Beverly Road and Higgins Road and then between Higgins Road and Illinois Route 53 in both directions, according to the statement.

Work to shift traffic will take place during overnight and off-peak daytime hours, and lane reductions will be removed by 5 a.m. on weekdays in advance of the morning rush hour.
