Winter Storm Could Dump Up To 14 Inches Of Snow On Chicago Area

(CBS) -- A winter storm expected to start late Saturday afternoon could dump up over a foot of snow on the Chicago area.

According to CBS 2 Meteorologist Ed Curran, a rain-snow mix in the late afternoon hours will gradually turn to all snow by the evening as temperatures lower. The snow is forecast to continue through the morning and afternoon on Sunday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 9 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Monday. There could be near white-out conditions during the day Sunday due to strong wind gusts up to 40 miles-per-hour.

The Chicago area and parts of Northwest Indiana could see between 12-14 inches of snow, with outer parts of the Chicago area getting between 10-12 inches. About five inches are expected by Sunday morning and then the stronger part of the storm moves in, snowing at a rate of about an inch an hour.

The city of Chicago has said that all of its plows and snow removal equipment will be deployed.

"Mother Nature has been kind to us so far, and our snow plow drivers and City crews have, and will continue to do a tremendous job throughout the winter to keep our streets paved, plowed and passable," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "City crews remain on alert and are prepared to respond to snowfall again overnight and tomorrow."

Emanuel also suggested that people check on their neighbors. You can check the progress of the snow plows with the city's plow tracker.
