High Wind Advisory In Effect For Chicago Area

(CBS) -- A high wind advisory went into effect at 6 p.m. for the Chicago area as heavy storms moved through the area.

The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. on Thursday. Winds are expected to gust to between 40 and 45 miles an hour and possibly as high as 55 mph, the National Weather Service says.

The heaviest thunderstorms moved through late Wednesday evening. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was in effect for the Chicago area until 11 p.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect for DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, LaSalle, Livingston counties until 9:15 p.m.

At O'Hare, 140 flights have been cancelled and there are 15 minute delays for outbound flights, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. Midway is experiencing 15 minute delays. To check the status of your flight, click here.

Metra trains could face delays because of the winds, which force the trains to slow down.

On the Indiana Toll Road, a wind ban has been issued beginning at 11 p.m. Chicago time, with all all triple tractor-trailers, long-doubles trucks banned from the roadway.

Indiana officials say the ban will be in effect until 6 p.m. Chicago time – Thursday.

"A lot of times you got a destination and time you got to meet and that just messes everything up," said West Virginia trucker Vince Lester.

He says it should be up to the drivers to decide.

"You feel that it's not safe that it's time to park it," he said.
