Will Teen Charged With Killing Sister Be Charged As Adult?

VERNON HILLS (CBS) -- Prosecutors are considering whether a 14-year-old girl charged with killing her younger half-sister should be tried as an adult.

Lake County prosecutor Mike Nerheim is weighing whether the unidentified juvenile should face adult murder charges in the case.

The Mundelein teenager entered a not guilty plea on Friday at the county courthouse in Vernon Hills, CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports. There was no decision on whether she will be tried as an adult, and the next hearing is set for Feb. 14.

If she is tried and convicted as an adult, the girl could face decades behind bars. The teenager allegedly stabbed her half-sister, who was 11-years-old, multiple times.

If the accused is formally charged as a juvenile, she would likely face a vastly reduced sentence if convicted.

Police say the older sister stabbed her half-sister more than 30 times in her bed.

With each strike, prosecutors said, the accused repeatedly told the victim that she was ungrateful for all the meals she cooked and all the chores she had performed for her.
