Whiting, Ind. Still Cleaning Up After Violent Storms

(CBS) -- Many communities are still cleaning up after the violent storms that hit the Chicago area a few days ago, reports WBBM's Terry Keshner.

"We probably haven't seen a storm like that in decades," said Whiting, Ind. Mayor Joseph Stahura.

Mayor Stahura says a retaining wall along the Lake Michigan shoreline took the brunt of it.

"850 pound rocks in certain locations were tossed around like softballs," he said. "Several of the rocks made it inland anywhere from 70 to 100 feet, just tossed like a ragdoll."

More than a dozen trees were uprooted as well, but the mayor says Whiting is able to fix most of the damages.

"Thank God there was nobody hurt," Mayor Stahula said. "We closed the park off after we saw some of the severe waves coming out, and the smartest move we did."

Other towns including Ogden Dunes are still cleaning up as well.
