White Sox's Jose Abreu Opts For Arbitration

(CBS) White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has opted to be eligible for salary arbitration in hopes of making more money than what was guaranteed in the last three years of his deal.

Abreu remains under team control through 2019. He was set to make $34 million over his next three years. By opting for salary arbitration, he hopes to exceed that amount over the course of the next three years.

Abreu, who turns 30 in January, originally signed a six-year, $68-million deal with the White Sox in late 2013. He hit .293 with 25 homers, 100 RBIs an .820 OPS in 2016. He's hit the 25-homer, 100-RBI mark in each of his first three MLB seasons.
