White Sox To Call Up Hard-Throwing Frankie Montas For Friday Doubleheader

(CBS) The White Sox will call up pitching prospect Frankie Montas to join them for Friday's home doubleheader against the Royals, according to Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan.

A right-hander renowned for topping 100 mph on the radar gun, the 22-year-old Montas is 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 62 strikeouts in 73 innings at Double-A Birmingham this season. He's had several recent starts limited to just an inning as he's also pitched in several exhibition games, including the Futures Game on Sunday in Cincinnati, where he was shelled for three earned runs on four hits in 2/3 innings.

MLB teams are allowed to recall a 26th player on days in which they have doubleheaders. It wasn't immediately clear whether Montas would stick with the big league club for more than one day. Montas is the White Sox's No. 5 prospect, according to Baseball America.

Jeff Samardzija and John Danks are currently schedule to start for Chicago in Friday's two games.
